Bizarre Bazaar
Saturday
September 20th, 2008
11:00 am to 6:00 pm
Adults, Children and Pets
Invited to Downtown Hammond Event
Downtown Hammond Council is hosting
the third annual Bizarre Bazaar event at Hohman, Rimbach and Fayette
streets in downtown Hammond.
Bizarre Bazaar is an outdoor,
one-day fest featuring pie baking and salsa eating contests, food
and arts and crafts vendors, children’s chess and adult doubles bean
bag tournaments, musical entertainment, a beer and margarita tent,
custom car show, kids games, a canine costume contest and more. At
11:30 a.m. the event offers a free outdoor concert by the Northwest
Indiana Symphony Orchestra sponsored by Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.,
Chase, NIPSCO, Rubino, Ruman, Crosmer, Smith, Sersic & Polen,
attorneys at law. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. At
4:30 p.m. rock-n-roll band Nomad Planets will perform.
New to the event this year is the
Stuff-a-Palooza Community Yard Sale inviting persons from throughout
the region to sell their slightly used treasures. All the event
details and registration forms can be found at
www.downtownhammond.org.
The fest is the second time
undertaking for the 53-year-old professional organization.
“At this point in time the Downtown
Hammond Council is at a place where many organization’s strive to
be; a balance of long time and new members who not only possess a
wide variety of talents but also are actively engaged in
revitalizing the downtown district,” said Sheldon Cutler, board
president and executive vice president of First Federal Savings and
Loan.
“Many of our board members are
successful businesspersons who understand that success is one
percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration, and have extended
that philosophy to putting together this event.” The event is a
fundraiser for the organization that will go toward other downtown
initiatives to improve the quality of life for those who live, work
and visit Hammond.
The event’s name was derived from
the organization’s desire to create an inviting atmosphere offering
something for everyone—adults, children and pets. Karen Maravilla,
board member and co-chair of the event said, “The bazaar name
represents the wide variety of activities and the bizarre name
represents events not often linked together. Can you name another
event that has a canine costume contest, a performance by a Symphony
Orchestra, a pie-baking contest and live rock-n-roll all on the same
day?”
“We think Hammond’s downtown is
unlike any other in the area as we have wonderful art and theater,
top notch professional services, award-winning healthcare services
and is a leader in technology as one of a small number of Indiana
certified technology parks,” Maravilla said.
Renae Tomczak, event co-chair said,
“When planning began for the event our goal was to start small and
grow the event, but thanks to Mayor McDermott, many city
departments, the school city of Hammond and chess coaches, other
non-profit partners and an extensive list of sponsors we’ve created
a large scale event that is a model for cooperation and
coordination.”
Admission to the event is free. Some
contests require pre-registration and a minimal fee. Visit
www.downtownhammond.org for event information and available
parking. Direct questions to Laura at 219.937.0111 or send an e-mail
to
