Visual Art in Schererville, Indiana

Several Indian trails plus U.S. Highways 41 and 30, modern trails of a motorized society, make Schererville the "Crossroads of the Nation." Schererville was also ranked as the 71st nicest place to live in the nation according to the CNNMoney's 2007 standings.

Liberty Bell Replica
This exact replica of the Liberty Bell, was purchased by Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in hopes of reawakening the Spirit of Liberty and Patriotism and giving Americans an opportunity to hear how the original Liberty Bell sounded. Since it was cast in exactly the same manner as the original, we can only assume that the deep resonant tones of the bell are identical to those which the Liberty Bell once had. At the same time, we hope that advances in mining and forging techniques will prevent the imperfections that resulted in the Liberty Bell's cracking from appearing in the bell. Cast in France, the Liberty Bell weighs 2,080 pounds and except for the crack, is an exact duplicate of the original. The Liberty Bell Replica is located at the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 8178 Cline Ave.

St. Michael the Archangel Parish
In the cemetery at St. Michael the Archangel Parish is a cone-shaped hill about 20 feet high, which is called Mount Calvary. On the summit of this hill stands an altar surmounted by a Crucifixion Scene of Ore Bronze. The 14 Stations of the Cross encircle this hill. In the 1920's, two lay religious brothers from the Divine Word Society, Brother Fridolin Ifen and Brother Paul Tanner, helped erect Calvary, cast and installed the Stations of the Cross, the Lourdes Grotto, the Garden of Gethsemane Grotto, and the Resurrection Grotto. They worked as a team with Brother Fridolin's speciality being grotto design and construction and Brother Paul's specialty being the sculpting of statues and crafting the reliefs.

Gethsemane Grotto - Full size figure of Jesus praying on his knees. In the background is a large relief of the three apostles - Peter, James and John - asleep.

Lourdes Grotto - Statues depicting Bernadette Soubirous experiencing an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a cave near Lourdes in 1858.

Resurrection Grotto - Large relief depicting Jesus' resurrection with his empty tomb at his feet.

During 2005 and early 2006, the Stations of the Cross were cast in bronze from the originals.
