East Chicago has a few hidden gems of local art available for viewing at its local main library and Pastrick branch Carnegie library including paintings by local dunes artist John Templeton, whose daughter Jean was a long time patron and friend of the library.

Tribute to Firefighters
The painted figure of a hulky fireman cradling a dark-haired infant emerges from smoke. Painted by Hector Marin of East Chicago. Painted on the side of a building, it can be seen when one travels West on Chicago Avenue, a block or so from Indianapolis Blvd.

Paintings of the Dunes
Painted by John Cowan Templeton. John Templeton, was a sign painter who arrived in Indiana Harbor in 1908. He became world famous for painting the Indiana Dunes. He worked at Inland Steel's rolling mill at night. These paintings are located within the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive.

The Gift of the Book to Mankind
Painted by Ernest Kasas of Indiana Harbor, East Chicago's WPA (The Works Progress Administration) Arts Project. It was completed May 1934 and was unveiled on January 24, 1935. The title: The Gift of the Book to Mankind The central figure is represented as awarding the public branch, typifying success, to those who have made a wise use of books and reading. The painter and radio announcer in the mural is Ernest Kasas and the man with the beard is his father. Other models were students from the High School. This painting is loacated at Robert A. Pastrick Branch Library, 1008 W. Chicago.

Statue of Jesus
This Statue of Jesus, holding a child is located in front of the St. Catherine's Hospital Birthing Center. It is a memorial in memory of the employees who have lost a child either through miscarriage or death. This Statue is located in front of the Birthing Center at St. Catherine's Hospital, 4321 Fir Street.

United Future
 
Indiana's First Lady Judy O'Bannon joined nearly 30 students in painting the first East Chicago Millennium Mural, featuring visions of the future. The mural is located at Pollution Control Industries, 4343 Kennedy Avenue in East Chicago.

Knowledge is Power
Ivy Tech State College, located at 410 East Columbus Drive, was the site of the final 2000 Mural. The theme for this mural was education. The mural was painted by renowned artist Tom Torluemke who is a Hammond resident.

Industrial Strength
Located at Clark Material and Handling, 524 W. Chicago Avenue, Industrial Strength showcases many aspects of East Chicago's industrial heritage. The mural was composed by Steve Segura and Painted by Marco Salazar.

151st Street Recreation Center Mural
The City of East Chicago Department of Public Information and TOM TORLUEMKE worked with the children at the 151st Street Recreation Center, 4925 Gladiola St., to brainstorm ideas regarding future, community, diversity etc. Based on their drawings, Tom outlined what we believed best described their thoughts and goals. Then the children helped paint the mural. Myrna Maldonado was the director over the program when the mural was painted.
