Oak Savannah Trail
(219) 945-0543

The Oak Savannah Trail is a 10.5 bike trail extending from from the Oak Ridge Prairie Park in Griffith, Indiana through Gary, Indiana and finally ending in Hobart, Indiana. The bike trail begins at the entrance to the Oak Ridge Prairie Park at the east end of the park near the scenic trout pond. The trail proceeds east leading to a bridge over Taft Street in Gary, Indiana and continues further east to the Oak Savannah Trail tunnel under Interstate 65 (I-65). Bikers can continue peddling east on the trail where they will enjoy the sights from the Oak Savannah Trail bridge which overlooks Lake George in Hobart. The trail continues through Hobart and ends at County Line Road.
~~~~~~~~~
The Oak Savannah Trail (OST) currently encompasses 8.25 miles from Oak Ridge Prairie County Park to the Prairie Duneland Trail at the Lake/Porter County Line Road in Portage with a break in Hobart. Trail users will be able to access the western segment of the trail from the trail head near the parking lot at Oak Ridge Prairie. This segment runs 6.25 miles to Wisconsin Street in Hobart. The eastern segment, following the Hobart break, may be accessed from a gravel parking lot at the northeast corner of Cleveland Street and State Road 51 in Hobart. This segment is 1.25 miles in length and will take users from the Cleveland/51 intersection to the Prairie Duneland Trail.
Citizens should exercise extreme caution as they use the OST because several at-grade road crossing’s have to be taken into consideration. Main, Chase, Harrison, Madison, Delaware, Georgia, Liverpool, and Union Streets all have moderate to heavy vehicular traffic that affects the OST. Special caution should be taken at Broadway where 30,000 vehicles pass daily. For safety purposes, the Lake County Parks strongly recommends that users at the Broadway intersection travel one block south via sidewalks and cross at the 53rd Avenue stoplight.
Trail users will enjoy the OST as it takes them on a journey through savannahs, remnant prairies, wetlands, lakes, parks, and residential neighborhoods.
The Lake County Parks and the City of Hobart are working together to close the gap between Wisconsin Street in Hobart and the Cleveland/51 intersection in the next few years. Any questions regarding this gap should be directed to the Hobart Parks Department.
  This is a 15 mile bike trail currently in its planning stage. The Northwest Regional Planning Commission and the Hoosier Rails-to-Trails Council are two organizations are working to make the Pennsy Greenway the first off-road, bi-state link in the region and would become part of the American Discovery Trail network. The plan calls for the bike trail to run from Crown Point, Indiana, connecting to Schererville, Munster, Dyer and then connect with Lansing, Illinois. This trail/connection planned to connect Lake County, Indiana and Cook County, Illinois is estimated to serve an immediate population of 109,000 and would connect directly to the 450-mile Burnham Greenway/Grand Illinois trail system in Illinois generating the potential to serve millions. Yellowstone Trail
  Runs through Valparaiso, from 37th Avenue in Hobart, the trail goes north on Broadway through Gary, then cut through East Chicago and Whiting. In 1912, a group of small town businessmen in South Dakota undertook an ambitious project to create a useful automobile route, the Yellowstone Trail, across America. This was at a time when roads weren't marked, there were few maps and slippery mud was the usual road surface. The Yellowstone Trail Association located a route, motivated road improvements, produced maps and folders to guide the traveler, and promoted tourism along its length. It became a leader in stimulating tourist travel to the Northwest and motivating good roads across America.
