Mel Fisher lived in the Glen Park area of Gary and went to Lew Wallace High School. He was a professional diver and treasure hunter. He ran a scuba diving school and trained over 65,000 divers and produced a successful underwater diving show on the West Coast. Mr. Fisher is most known for his discovery of the Atocha, a seventeenth century Spanish galleon that sank off the Florida Keys, in 1985. The treasure was worth an estimated $400 million dollars.
