DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS

Meals on Wheels delivery volunteers are the people who actually deliver meals to the homes of our elderly, ill and disabled Lake County clients.  Volunteers use their own vehicles to deliver, and they pick up the food at drop-off sites within their own community.  Meals are packed in a hot food container and cold food container which the volunteer puts in their vehicle.  Volunteers are scheduled on a monthly basis and are sent a newsletter and monthly schedule.  All volunteers must go out on a training run with staff or an experienced driver before they make a commitment to us.  We like our volunteers to experience Meals on Wheels first to make sure it is something they would enjoy doing.

Once meals are picked up at the drop-off site, volunteers deliver meals to clients according to the directions provided.  Once the route is complete, volunteers return empty hot/cold containers to the drop-off site.  While on the route, our volunteers notify the Meals on Wheels office if the client does not answer the door or has an emergency.

Our clients are elated to see our volunteers, because many may not have any other contact with another person during the day.  We have learned that our volunteer visits are just as important as the food!

Vantastics

Meals on Wheels has a fleet of vans that deliver meals to the community drop-off sites.  Volunteer opportunities are also available for these positions.  Volunteers are responsible for packing the van, driving the van to the drop-off sites, unloading the containers and meeting/greeting our delivery volunteers.  Time requirement is normally 3 hours.
