The National
Retired Teachers Association (NRTA) has partnered with Junior
Achievement (JA) for the coming year. "JA in a Day" is coming Tuesday,
Nov. 18 for seventh graders at Pierce Middle School from 7:45 to 10:45
a.m. The program is called America Works. About 32 volunteers are
needed for that day. Please call Roz Malouhos at 219.476.0099 or email:
rmalouhos@jachicago.org if interested.
Lake County proudly tallied
more than 58,000 volunteer hours for 2007 and was recognized at the annual
Representative Assembly in Indianapolis in May. Congratulations to Sarah
Boyajian, co-chair, who achieved the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Clock
Award for outstanding community service for Area I. Area I encompasses the nine
northwestern counties of Indiana. Shirley Hewlett, LCRTA president and
newsletter editor, was chosen by the state committee as Outstanding Volunteer
for Area I for the second year.Forms for reporting
volunteer hours are found on the tables at luncheons and in every newsletter.
Please help us at the Legislature during the coming session by turning in your
volunteer hours by the December luncheon. Every hour counts! If 500 members
turned in 10 hours each, our accumulated hours would soar!
What counts? Volunteer time with church, community, and
especially children. However, one may not count hours spent with family and
relatives.

IRTA has announced a 2-year partnership with Court
Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Members are urged to inquire about
the special training to become legal CASAs for children who are thrown
into the court situation through no fault of their own. Often the CASA
is the only repeating face for such children. IRTA President Eugene
Wease served as example, by finishing the training to become a CASA
volunteer last summer.
IRTA and LCRTA has partnered with CASA. Visit their website to
learn when new classes begin if interested in certification:

Members, please report the hours you donate!
The Indiana Legislature is very aware that retired teachers are giving
back to their communities! Turn these in by the December luncheon
or mail to either Community Service Chairperson. New forms can be found
in every newsletter, at the luncheons, or by contacting the Community
Service chairpersons, Mary Zelencik and Sarah Boyajian, listed on the
"contact us" page. Or try our new Interactive Hours Form and report your hours on line!
