Energy Assistance Program (EAP) is a program that provides a one time credit on utilities for low-income households. It generally begins in November and runs through May. If a household is eligible, a designated amount will be credited to the utility bill.
When all other programs have expired, Utility Assistance is provided by local donations to families without utilities. When funds are available, payment is made for emergencies including water and phone bills.
Food/Clothing Pantry provides a three to five day supply of emergency food to families in need every 30 days or as needed in emergencies. Donated clothing is provided to all in need.
Emergency Services provides assistance for families in emergency situations with rent, utility bill, clothing, etc. Emergency situations include fire or weather disaster victims.
Information and Referral is a service provided by GHCS to determine a client's needs. Referrals are then made for job training and placement, food stamps, welfare, social security, education, health programs, and elderly services and a variety of other programs and services.
Handyman/Chore person Program will offer direct services for the low and moderate income elderly and individuals with physical disabilities. The services will include but are not limited to: lawn mowing, raking leaves, washing windows, shoveling snow, carrying items to and from basement or attic, moving furniture, installing safety devices, fire extinguishers, locks, and smoke detectors. This service is available in the City of Hammond.
Weatherization applications are processed by GHCS for home insulation, storm windows, doors, caulking, etc. to low-income and elderly persons. Qualified renters and homeowners are eligible.
Congregate Meals for persons over 60 are served at eleven locations. The meal, which provides one-third of the daily nutrition, is part of a four-hour program each day.
Senior Companions visit on a frequent and regular basis, giving elderly persons they visit a sense of security, providing anticipation for tomorrow, and often forming close friendships.

Food Needed!
Dear Friends,
Greater Hammond desperately needs your help! At this time we are extremely low on food supply. The Spring food drive, which normally assists us in stocking our food pantry in early fall, ended up only collecting about 10% of the food that it has in past years. Not having the other 90% of food will make it extremely difficult to feed the more than 600 families that depend on our program each month.
Could you please help others by asking your family, friends, and neighbors to collect non-perishable food items for our food pantry? You can bring food donations to our pantry located at 824 Hoffman Street, Hammond during business hours Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm or you can call us for more information. Please help us battle hunger in our community.

Medicare Questions
What is Medicare prescription drug coverage?
Medicare prescription drug coverage is insurance that covers both brand-name and generic prescription drugs at participating pharmacies in your area. Medicare prescription drug coverage provides protection for people who have very high drug costs.
Who can get Medicare prescription drug coverage?
Everyone with Medicare is eligible for this coverage, regardless of income and resources, health status, or current prescription expenses.
How does Medicare prescription drug coverage work?
Your decision about Medicare prescription drug coverage depends on the kind of health care coverage you have now. There are two ways to get Medicare prescription drug coverage. You can join a Medicare prescription drug plan or you can join a Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare Health Plans that offer drug coverage.
Whatever plan you choose, Medicare drug coverage will help you by covering brand-name and generic drugs at pharmacies that are convenient for you.
Like other insurance, if you join, you will pay a monthly premium, which varies by plan, and a yearly deductible. You will also pay a part of the cost of your prescriptions, including a copayment or coinsurance. Costs will vary depending on which drug plan you choose. Some plans may offer more coverage and additional drugs for a higher monthly premium. If you have limited income and resources, and you qualify for extra help, you may not have to pay a premium or deductible. You can apply or get more information about the extra help by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visiting www.socialsecurity.gov.
Why should I get Medicare prescription drug coverage?
Medicare prescription drug coverage provides greater peace of mind by protecting you from unexpected drug expenses. Even if you don't use a lot of prescription drugs now, you should still consider joining. As we age, most people need prescription drugs to stay healthy. For most people, joining now means protecting yourself from unexpected prescription drug bills in the future.
What if I have a limited income and resources?
There is extra help for people with limited income and resources. Almost 1 in 3 people with Medicare will qualify for extra help and Medicare will pay for almost all of their prescription drug costs. You can apply or get more information about the extra help by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visiting www.socialsecurity.gov.
