Do you ever feel that your concerns are not being heard or that you're being judged because of your child's emotional, behavioral, and mental disability?  Do you want a greater voice in the treatment of your child?  And, do you lack connections to community resources?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you're not alone.  But you have a resource.

We help families better address the needs of children with Serious Emotional Disabilities (SED), ensuring that everyone has equal access to community resources.  How?  In part, through advocacy efforts to get practitioners to view the entire child and his or her family rather than focusing on the disability.  After all, it's only when families are treated as equal partners in planning, implementing and evaluating services, have appropriate and accessible support, and are empowered to make decisions about their own lives, that needs are truly met

Family Action Network provides support, advocacy and education to parents and caregivers of children with serious emotional behavior disorders.

Children with serious emotional, behavioral and mental disorders cut across all income, ethnic, education, racial and religious groups.  They are any age from young babies to the transition to adulthood.  They are found in both two parent and single parent homes.  And they are living with birth, adoptive and foster families.

All families touched by Serious Emotional Disabilities (SED) share the need for accurate assessment and appropriate therapeutic, educational, social and recreational programs for their children.  They need services that truly support their efforts to help their children learn, develop, and grow within their own homes and communities.

We're here to help make sure you get what you need to ensure the best outcomes for your child as well as the rest of your family.

We provide the chance for families to work with professionals and other interested citizens to improve the options for children with SED.  We form a cohesive and enduring federation of organizations and individuals dedicated to raising awareness with policy makers, professional organizations, legislators and the general public about the needs of children with emotional problems and their families.  And, we are helping bring about innovative programming that promotes integration of services and the development and implementation of policies, legislation, funding mechanisms, and service systems that utilize the strengths of families.

The Family Action Network is also your way to connect with other parents in the same situation.  By joining, you'll be able to:

  • Receive special training
  • Advocate with and on behalf of your family
  • Youth Groups
  • Participate in family activities and support groups
  • Connect more fully to community resources.

While we recognize that we don't have all the answers, we are working to create better solutions.  Through our non-adversarial advocacy approach and our partnership building, the Family Action Network:

  • Enables individuals and organizations to advocate for ways to better meet the needs of children with mental health needs.
  • FAN sponsor, organize, design and administer educational conferences, seminars and other services.
  • FAN initiate and develop volunteer opportunities to meet emerging community needs.
  • FAN serve as a clearinghouse for the referral of individuals and groups to service organizations in the community.
  • FAN assists other endeavors that promote disability awareness as part of their missions.

It's True!  Family participation and support is fundamental.  If you want to create a successful System of Care, your commitment means that:

  • Programs and plans would better address the priority needs of parents.
  • Full enrollment and participation by parents becomes more likely.
  • Public officials and others find it harder to ignore treatment plans.
  • Solutions to community challenges, opportunities, needs and concerns in delivering services become more cost effective.
  • Parents develop a greater sense of ownership of treatment plans and a greater dedication to seeing that they are implemented.
  • Providers deliver higher quality services.
