Why Highland Dollars for Scholars? |
Highland Dollars for Scholars is an affiliate of Citizens Scholarship Foundation of America. Locally we encourage individuals and businesses to support residents of Highland who are graduating from high school and going onto a post secondary education.
As our foundation has grown over the past years, we ask that contributions of less than $500.00 be included in our general scholarship fund. Two annual fundraising activities are held each year. In the fall we hold our annual 'Phon-A-Thon' asking for contributions from the residents of the Town of Highland. The HDFS winter fundraiser is our annual 'Buck for a Basket' project asking businesses and community members to contribute. These events generate nothing but 'NET' gain for education!
There are many ways you as a donor can give 'Dollars' to a Highland Scholar. We receive contributions through United Way pledges, Indiana Educational license plate revenue, and Target Educational contributions when Highland High School is designated as the recipient. Highland elementary schools, Highland Middle School, and Our Lady of Grace have supported HDFS since our organization began in 1994 through their parent organizations. Participation by student and adult volunteers in local parades has also raised "dollars" for scholars. Memorial scholarships are an option for donations of $500 or greater. Lesser amounts are added to the general membership fund and awarded as a scholarship of not less than $500. HDFS is proud of the fact that 95% of all money donated is awarded as scholarships. The other 5% goes to operating costs.
HDFS maintains accounts for businesses, organizations and individuals whose contributions are over $500 and wish to give scholarships in their own name. Those donating in this fashion can work with our coordinator to develop the criteria for their scholarship. These scholarship recipients may be selected by the contributor but the majority are chosen by our scholarship committee.
The HDFS scholarship committee is responsible for selecting recipients for awards each year. The committee uses an excellent process whereby the applicants are anonymous and are viewed as a number. The application is then scored in areas of academics, financial need, work activities, extra curricular activities, and community service. The application process is developed from a model presented to us by the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of America. Every May we hold the HHS Honors Night Program in which the awards are presented. Scholarship checks are written to both the recipient and the college/university/vocational school that they choose to attend. These checks are available starting the first week of June in which the recipient has one calendar year to use the scholarship.
Highland Dollars for Scholars has been affiliated with the National Dollars for Scholars Foundation since 1994. Our success has been due to the "OPEN ARMS" by residents, organizations, and businesses of the Town of Highland. Your generosity has allowed our program to grow substantially over the years. Thank You Highland!
