WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE ?

The purpose of CALC. Inc is to aid adults and older youth in acquiring listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

IS THERE A NEED?

An estimated 23 million persons in America are illiterate. An additional 23-26 million cannot read or write well enough to cope with ordinary reading matter which is vital to their work and to living in our society.

WHO CAN BECOME A TUTOR ?

A tutor can be anyone who can read and write English reasonably well and is willing to take a 4 hour workshop to learn the easy-to-use method developed by Dr. Frank C. Laubach.

This one-to-one phonetic approach makes use of the vocabulary, experience and interest of the adult.

HOW MUCH TIME IS NEEDED ?

The suggested time to be spent in tutoring is from one to two hours twice a week.

Lessons are private and confidential and are held at a time and place convenient to both tutor and student. The Hammond Main Library and branch libraries are available for tutoring.

WHO CAN BECOME A STUDENT ?

Any person who is at least 16 years of age and cannot read well enough to handle everday tasks of work and family living is eligible. The lessons are free, but the student pays for his/her books if possible.

"IF YOU FEED A MAN, HE WILL HUNGER AGAIN. IF YOU CLOTHE A MAN, THE CLOTHES WILL WEAR OUT. BUT TEACH A MAN TO READ AND HE CAN HELP HIMSELF." DR. FRANK C. LAUBACH
