Joseph Hess in 1851 founded a small German community consisting of farmers, trappers, carpenters, and blacksmiths, which is now Hessville. He served as postmaster and ran a general store. He soon saw the need for a school, and in 1869 while he was the first North Township Trustee, the schoolhouse was built in Hessville.
