CRN  5035 Historic Waterways

Fee is $475 (due May 30th). Non-credit Fee covers most meals (continental breakfasts, four lunches and five dinners), guided tours and four nights of hotel accommodations based on double room occupancy.

Course Description: Through visits to historic sites in the Middle Mississippi region -- Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri -- students will experience the Mississippi River's sweeping history from the Indian settlement at Cahokia Mounds through the completion of a system of locks and dams in the mid-twentieth century. Human and natural events continually alter the course of the Mississippi River. Some of those changes contribute to disastrous floods such as the ones in 1927, 1993, and 2005, as well as to the environmental problems that threaten water quality today. This course aims to heighten students’ environmental awareness as well as their general historical knowledge of the Great River and its towns.

United Way offers lots of choices

By Jean Starr
Times Columnist
| Monday, May 05, 2008 |

Whether you’re an employee or an employer, it’s time to sign up for Day of Caring. The event, sponsored by United Way, was established in 1992 to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase the awareness of local human service agencies and schools, and demonstrate what people working together for the community’s good can accomplish.

Kathy Bonaventura, United Way Volunteer Center director in Porter, Lake and LaPorte counties, said she is looking forward to the event, scheduled for Aug. 22 or the morning of Aug. 23.

"Every year, we’ve been getting larger," she said. "This is the first time we have put together a regional (event) with Lake, Porter, LaPorte counties all on the same day."

Bonaventura says getting involved benefits both the nonprofit organizations and the volunteers. Of course, the most obvious benefit is witnessing the sheer volume of work completed in a short time by so many people.

"It’s a one-time event, but my hope is that it is just a start of relationship-building in this community," she said. "Many times, people continue to volunteer with those agencies."

From a business point of view, it builds employee morale.

"You’re outside the office doing something positive," Bonaventura said. "Secondly, it’s good because it’s that sense of giving back. And we (nonprofit agencies) make sure they are recognized."

Last year’s events brought out more than 700 volunteers in Porter County alone. United Way’s Web site offers a search tool now in order for businesses and individuals to choose a project that appeals to them. Visit the Web site at
http://unitedwaypc.org/ and check out all of the opportunities. Then follow the simple procedures:

1. Choose a team leader.

2. To view the projects in your county, go to the drop-down box under "Results." Scroll down to view all of the projects in your county.

3. Click on the link, "Day of Caring flyer," to print the sign-up sheet. Make copies and post them all around the office.

4. Follow instructions to pick your project and register your team. If you like a certain project and you do not have enough team members, it's OK. Another team can work with you if they choose it too, or the project may just take you a little longer to complete if no one else picks it up.

5. Please make sure that you and every member of your team sign the picture release that is attached before Aug. 15, so your team pictures can be posted on the Day of Caring Web site.

6. The agency contact will call or e-mail you to set up a time to come out and view the project site.

For information about Day of Caring, call Britta or Kathy at (219) 464-3583.

Volunteers Needed

Meals on Wheels, a program of the Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County, is seeking volunteer drivers to deliver meals to elderly and homebound residents. The need is particularly great in Portage. Volunteers pick up the meals at a central site on weekdays and spend about an hour to 90 minutes delivering the food on their route. Drivers can volunteer as often as their schedules permit. Last year, the Porter County program delivered 60,000 meals to more than 350 residents. Organizers are looking for businesses willing to adopt Meals on Wheels routes and provide volunteers to deliver meals, also.

Contact: Michael Boos, 219 933-7149 or 312 220-0120 Ecumenical voices sought For AWLI festival

The Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative (AWLI) is inviting members of area churches to join its ecumenical choir for the 8th annual Wolf Lake Bi-State Wetlands, Wind & Water festival on Sunday, May 25.

The Sunrise Worship Service will be held near the obelisk at William Powers Conservation Area, Chicago, IL. Dr. Rev. Zaki L. Zaki will officiate with a color guard provided by the Polish Legion of American Veterans.

Mary Kuzniar, choir director at Hammond’s Morton High School, will conduct the singing and guitarist/singer Ken Czulno will accompany. A rehearsal will be scheduled approximately a week before the event.

The two-day festival, which is free to the public, showcases the natural resources of the Wolf Lake area in Chicago and Hammond, Indiana, and promotes bi-state cooperation. It provides a fun alternative to those seeking to avoid the high cost of travel to more distant recreational areas.

The whole family will enjoy the entertainment and such recreational events as Birds du Jour, Around the Lake Bike Tour and canoeing/kayaking. There also will be several educational presentations.

Besides the kite fly, Saturday’s activities include wind surfing and sailing instructions and fishing clinics. Sunday begins with the ecumenical Sunrise Service, with presentations and activities continuing throughout the day.

A cricket frog ay and singing and story-telling by campfire conclude the day.

The Festival is also a fund raiser, supporting AWLI’s continued efforts to promote, preserve, and enhance the natural area surrounding Wolf Lake. More than $9 million was spent on Wolf Lake during past years by federal and local agencies.

With that investment, AWLI’s commitment looms even greater.

Those who wish to join the choir should contact AWLI at 219-933-7149 or 312-220-0120.

AWLI will conduct the festival in collaboration with the Hammond Port Authority, Chicago’s 10th Ward Office, Hammond’s Department of Parks and Recreation, Lake County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Lake County Solid Waste Management District, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, American Legion Illiana Post 220, the Polish Legion of American Veterans, Hegewisch and Vodak/East Side branches of the Chicago Public Library and the East Side United Methodist Church, and Boy Scouts of America Troops 533 and 542.

AWLI is a bi-state, non-for-profit organization and land trust with a mission to enhance and improve the Wolf Lake watershed.
