Joseph Hess in 1851 founded a small German community consisting of farmers, trappers, carpenters, and blacksmiths, which is now Hessville. He served as postmaster and ran a general store. He soon saw the need for a school, and in 1869 while he was the first North Township Trustee, the schoolhouse was built in Hessville.

The Merrillville Community Planetarium, located at Piece Middle School, is a unique theater for presenting programs about astronomy and the space sciences. The planetarium is equipped with a domed ceiling and a special projector that projects stars on the dome, giving the audience the illusion of looking up at the night sky. Slides, movies, videos, special effects, lasers, and sound are all used to present shows in the planetarium theater.
